Testimonials:

"Alhamdulilah! I had never imagined that I would be able to study under such a knowledgeable Sheikh. The course was breathtaking and full of practical advices. The amount of knowledge he shared in these two days was amazing, Subhan Allah. I would like to thank and make dua for MEOC for organizing such beautiful journeys for us. They just pull you out of this race of the world. May Allah protect all of us from the fitnah of this world. May these journeys carry on, ameen!" - Shazia Seemi (Bristol)

"I was just wanted to add to the growing feedback of how remarkable that weekend was for me. By Allah, I do not say it lightly that it was possibly the best weekend I've ever had. The introduction to the study of Hadith, Shaykh Akram's Nadwi teaching and the impeccable jems and one-liners he would dish out regularly stunned me constantly throughout the course. But more than that, being taught by such a knowledgeable and humble scholar, masha'Allah, was a unique and awe-inspiring experience for me. Alhamdulillah, I was able to stay after Maghrib and also after Fajr, to listen to his lectures outside of the course. So in essence, my entire weekend was spent in the Shaykh's company and I could understand -- rather, catch a glimpse of -- how students in the past would love to remain in their teacher's company, soaking up their knowledge and benefiting from their wisdom. Jazkallahu khair for the opportunity to attend such an incredible course, and insha'Allah, I pray I can attend it again (up north!). May Allah SWT bless Shaykh Akram Nadwi and preserve his likes, Ameen. (I'd also like to add that the book stall was amazing, masha'Allah -- I don't think I've spent so much on books in one go!)" - Aanisah Rahim (London)

"Probably the best Islamic education event I have ever attended! I would urge anyone who is serious about connecting to a traditional authority of Islamic knowledge, or just wants an Iman-boost, to attend events with Shaykh Akram. MEOC are brilliant for organising it. May Allah reward you abundantly for this and all your efforts. I can't imagine the reward for someone who works to link people of the 21st century to the Prophet (SAWS). May Allah always keep our intentions pure for Him. Ameen" - Abu Musa (London)

"I would just like to say how excellently organised the seminar was and also how beneficial, may allah reward the sheikh and all the brothers and sisters involved with organisation of the seminar abundantly. The venue was also excellent and the over night stay in the masjid was very convenient and also uplifting. The only improvement I can suggest is to have more courses in the north and the midlands but you guys are doing that anyway. Jazakallah khair for everything" - Naveed Raza (Birmingham)

"Attending the imam Nawwawis 40 hadith under a muhadith like Shaykh Akram Nadwi is an experience which is somethin else. He explains the hadith in such detail and at the same time teaches in a way you can understand and relate to. He is a real teacher that can teach you so that you understand and remember and even shows you how to act upon it. He has such knowledge and wisdomthat just opens your mind. And at the same time when you study with him in person you see his simple and humble he is MashaAllah. May Allah reward him abundantly for his efforts and preserve him so that more people can benefit inshaAllah. If there is anyone who wants to learn then he should make the effort to learn from this great shaykh" - Mohammad Kausar Chowdhury (London)

"MashaAllaah my family loved the seminar.. it was well organised. The facilities were excellent, especially creche facilities. Thanks go out to the sisters looking after all the mischievous kids.Apart from a short talk a year ago, this is the first time i have attended the shaykh's talks. All i can say is 'where has he been?'.  MashaAllaah one of best two or three courses I have attended in all my 12 or so years as a practicing muslim. Full of real knowledge, straight to the facts, not much razmatazz, just how it should be. Thinking of making it a regular event..inshaAllaah. May Allaah reward you all with the best." - Saud Jukaku (London)

"The atmosphere was such a brilliant one that it pulled you in like a magnet. The wisdom and anecdotes given in the explanation of these traditions were priceless. They brought one's focus back to God and the hereafter, which made the class not only academic but spiritual. I felt at peace and like a true student of knowledge again." - Sofwan Ahmed (London)

"May Allah reward you, the sheikh and all the volunteers for a truly blessed event. The experience was truly enlightening. May Allah have mercy on all your families and grant them Janatul Firdous" - Sujel Miah (Luton)

"I thank you and may Allah reward you all for your efforts. This was one of the most inspiring and beneficial courses I have ever been to. I have been telling all my friends they must attend it next time so you need to run it in London again soon" - Syed Yaqoob Ali (London)

"I completed the study of this text with Shaykh Muhammad Akram a couple of years ago, when he taught it in Central London; it was a most inspiring and enthralling encounter. I could not let another opportunity like that slip through my fingers. MashaAllah, the amount of knowledge and information Shaykh can capture in a couple of sentences and the sheer pace he teaches at; not once could my pen pause for breathe. The way Shaykh takes a hadith, dissects and then extrapolates it to contemporary applications, really emphasised how the Qur'an and Sunnah are compatible in the 21st Century. Every point he makes seems so important that one cannot help but TRY and write EVERYTHING down!!! Shaykh didn't even need to be eloquent in his speech, because the simple yet informative explanations he gave were enough to bamboozle us. It was a very blessed gathering; many students and scholars had gathered from across the country. It was a great virtue to be part of such a hallowed congregation. Those who never attended a lecture of Shaykh Muhammad Akram, I assure you that it'll be a lecture where you won't start dozing half way through, but rather you'll be straining both your ears to try and catch every word he utters. Because when you've missed one word, you've missed a whole chapter of Knowledge. I pray that Allah protects and preserved Shaykh Muhammad Akram and rewards his for all his efforts. And may Allah reward MEOC for organising such an inspiring and virtuous course. Ameen. If you organised this course again in London, I would definitely attend, inshaAllah!!!" - Tufayl Ahmed (London)

"Thank you and all the volunteers and especially Shaikh Nadwi for organising and delivering such a great course. I feel honoured and blessed for having the opportunity to attend and in-sha Allah benefit from learning the sacred hadith. May Allah SWT bless you all abundantly for all your efforts and sacrifices and your valuable time. I wholeheartedly recommend Shaikh's courses to all. He is not only very knowledgeable but also very humble and pious. May Allah SWT bless him with good health, long age and more knowledge and wisdom! Amen" - Shakil Ahmed (Birmingham)

"How magnificent to have spent a weekend in the company of the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam and his companions, reading and studying their ahadeeth. I feel as though I was transported to their times and have returned with renewed strength and resolve to continue the work we need to do in the ‘Daar ud-Da’wah’ we live in. I am sitting here with Ijaazah in hand feeling honoured that Allah allowed me to be a student of Sheikh Akram Nadwi and through him find some connection with some of the great scholars of our past. From his poignant scholarly anecdotes, to his emphatic exhortations, punctuated with Urdu and Persian poetry; studying with the Sheikh is a truly enriching experience. I’m actually learning a lot from him both about rectifying myself and the most important focal points for that and rectifying some of the causes of the downfall of our Ummah today. Without resorting to alienating any particular group or school of thought, the Sheikh is not afraid to hold a mirror up to what needs changing in our communities and in our times. I liked the balance of holistic spiritual principles and finer technical details Sheikh also discussed and his lessons are suitable for serious students of knowledge and people who are in the early stages of their journey. I look forward to future courses. I found the crèche facility to be very useful. I would have found it very difficult to attend without it. The venue was great and respected the privacy of brothers and sisters. May Allah make knowledge a proof for us and not against us. Ameen." - Fatima Barkatullah (London)

"A comprehensive review of the most famous forty hadith collection, the students were given an insight into the meaning of the hadith and how it could be applied to ones daily life. Shaykh Akram explantion of the hadith is a testament to his indepth knowledge of the hadith literature and its allied sciences. Gems of information were given to students at the course from our pious predecessors- priceless! A course that was valuable to students of knowledge , scholars and the layman alike. Credit has to also be paid to MEOC for organising and delivering such a course. May Allah reward the Shaykh and the volunteers of MEOC- i look forward to attending future courses." - Dr Afzal Mohammed (Burton upon Trent)

Al-Jalal Masjid Luton in collaboration with MEOC Presents

Best of Manners
The Ingredient for True Reform

By Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi (Oxford)

Date: Saturday, 11 May 2013 Time: 09:30am - 4:00pm

Venue: Al Jalal Masjid, 314 Biscot Road, Luton LU3 1AZ

'Manners of the Messenger (pbuh)' - A structured seminar covering selected ahadith pertaining to the beautiful character and manners of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The only reason I have been sent is to perfect good manners." (Bukhari).  Adab includes all that is good, every noble characteristic, habit, or trait a believer should apply to life. The Prophet (peace be upon him), had the best of manners, and truly we are taught the manner of everything from eating, drinking, to social interactions and even private things such as relieving ourselves; through His noble example and teachings.  On this one day seminar our esteemed Shaykh hopes to examine a selection of hadiths from the Sunnah of Abu Duwud’s Kitab al-Adab relating to the manners and etiquettes of the Prophet (peace be upon him).  Islam attaches significant attention to the cultivation of good manners and noble moral qualities that increase our taqwa and tawaadu (humility).  This one day unique course will engulf every student with the knowledge of the Prophetic character. With the hope every student will aspire to become from among those who are the best with their manners and character to their family, neighbours and community.  As the Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized, "the best of you are those who possess the best manners." (Bukhari)

If ticket sales have ended you may still be able to come and pay at the door but you may not receive a printed booklet. Instead an electronic version may be arranged. Please email mail@meoc.org.uk

Seminar: Interactive teaching style with Q&A.  A seminar booklet containing all relevant ahadith will be provided along with a detailed explanation by the Shaykh to the students.  There will be refreshments also provided.  Please note there is a professional video link up between the Shaykh in the main prayer hall (where the brothers will sit) and the sisters prayer hall (on the ground floor).

The course is open to brothers and sisters.  Entry is by prior booking only.  Places are limited so book and pay early to guarantee a place.

The seminar fee is only £10.  Please do not allow the fee to put you off attending the seminar.  If brothers or sisters have issues with the fee then please contact Saiful on 07739 850155 or email info@aljalalmasjid.org and insha’Allah a suitable arrangement can be made.

Testimonials

"Jazak'Allah khair for a fabulous seminar. I truly enjoyed it and it was very much worth the trek from London to Cambridge" - Antti Kangaslahti, London

"The Fiqh of Love was the most amazing Islamic seminar I have ever attended. I have told all my friends and family about Sheikh Nadwi and his inspiring talk. All in all, I want to say that everything was brilliant. The food arrangements, prayer arrangements, book stall...everything. Thank you so much for making it a possibility" - Anosha Saleem, LLM Student, Cambridge University

"The sheikh explained with such elegant simplicity the duties and rights of wife and husband, and even of children. The fact that he stressed the Islamic responsibilities helped cast away many of the cultural shackles that often imprison Muslims in less than pleasant marriages. If everyone took this course before they got married, they would truly appreciate their spouses all the greater, and they would be better Muslims for doing so, raising stronger families. This would then reflect itself in the state of our Ummah. I also enjoyed the wisdom with which he regarded divorce. A solution provided by Allah, so that no one becomes an oppressor....MashaAllah, beautiful!" - Sarah Elgazzar, Cambridge

"The course was simply amazing, it was a lot of information to take in but was definitely worthwhile. As for Dr Mohammed Akram Nadwi, words cannot serve justice for explaining how humble yet knowledgeable he is. Alhamdulillah I went with my whole family and intend to attend all of his future courses InshaAllah" - Rahee Ahmed, Law Student, Kent University

"The sincerity and piety of sheikh Akram Nadawi was a great source of inspiration for me. His great knowledge was beautifully expressed masha' Allah in a very simple way that touches everyone in the audience regardless of their marital status. I came along with a friend who is a new Muslim not intending to attend all sessions, but we ended up there all day. The emphasis on the importance of the family, how simple are Islamic rules, the distinction between our cultural heritage and the true message of Islam and his openness to answer all audience questions, in my opinion were the reasons behind the great success of the session yesterday. It was a great honour for me to attend yesterday's session and I thank Allah for giving me the unique chance to attend a session by a great a scholar to guide me through out my marriage-life." - Mona ElQazzaz, PhD Student, Cambridge University

This is an unmissable seminar for those married and those yet to get married - both old and young (including teenagers). Limited places available. Book your place today.

Course Information

<<Seek help with steadfastness and prayer– though this is hard indeed for anyone but the humble>> [Qur'an 2:45]

"There is nothing more important in the life of a believer than the prayer (salah). If someone says Islam is the prayer they are not wrong as prayer is the best way to turn to Allah subhana huwa ta'ala. We have been created to turn to Allah alone (hanifiyyah) and to submit to Him (islam). Prayer combines both of these aspects. This is why the first thing commanded to all the Prophets, Messengers and their followers is the prayer" - Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi

<<But there came after them generations who neglected prayer and were driven by their own desires. These will come face to face with their evil>> [Qur'an 19:59]

If there is nothing more important in ones life than prayer then why do we ignore it; why do we neglect it and why do we not enjoy it? The simple answer is we do not know what prayer is; we do not know what prayer means and we do not know how to pray. As a result our prayers have become superficial and lacking life. We focus on the outward aspects of the prayer (and sometimes even fight over them) but the inward is neglected. The real prayer is the prayer that is prayed with not only the body and the tongue but also with the mind and the heart. So how do we bring back the real spirit of the prayer in our lives, the prayer that combines the mind, body and the heart?

Please join Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi in the forthcoming revolutionary seminar The Real Fiqh of Salah on Sunday in Peterborough that explores the real deep meaning of prayer as introduced by our father Ibrahim ('alayhi salaam) and as followed by our Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam).

How will you benefit?
  1. You will learn about the meaning and the purpose of the prayer
  2. You will learn about the history of prayer and its link to Ibrahim (AS)
  3. You will learn about the prayer of the Prophet (SAW)
  4. You will learn about the prayer of other Prophets and Messengers
  5. You will learn about the prayer of the pious and righteous of the past
  6. You will learn how to develop khushoo (humility/attentiveness) in the prayer
  7. You will learn how to seek help with the prayer
  8. You will learn how to enjoy the prayer
  9. You will learn the rulings of the prayer
  10. You will learn the importance of the prayer

"The Qur’an is unlike any other book. Its arrangement and style are very different. People should keep this in mind when studying the Qur’an otherwise they may not benefit. Many people do not know this so they are confused about the Qur’an" - Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi

The Qur’an is the most read book in the world but perhaps the least understood. Although the Qur’an is in this world it does not belong to this world. It is the eternal word of Allah, The Most High. It is unlike any other book - its style and arrangement are unique and so is its method of teaching. It is ironic that many people do not realise this. They approach the Qur’an as they would approach any other book and this often leads to confusion and disappointment. The forthcoming groundbreaking seminar deals with this problem and  provides the necessary framework for understanding, reflecting and benefiting from the Qur’an in a way that has not been done in the English language before, by one of the foremost scholars of the western world. Places are limited please register online today.

A fair and open society encourages its citizens to strive, earn and trade in a manner that benefits the society as a whole. Honesty and integrity in practice and in policy protect the vulnerable and help the trader and the society to thrive in a stable and fair system.

The Islamic banking and finance system was developed to presumably build such a society. Today, Islamic banking and finance is a trillion dollar industry and its players include major global banks and financial institutions as well as regional banks in Muslim countries. It has come a long way, from its beginnings in the '60s to where it is now, to even be proposed as an alternative to conventional finance. Notwithstanding its growth and popularity, Islamic Finance is not without controversy. There are fundamental issues that still need addressing. The forthcoming seminar "Islamic Banking & Finance - a Myth or a Reality?" takes a critical look at the approach, foundations and development as well as the application of modern Islamic finance to explore whether it is in keeping with the true spirit and objectives of Islam in addition to shariah rules.

This is the first seminar of its kind by one of the leading western Islamic scholars and researchers - Shaykh Dr Mohammed Akram Nadwi of The Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, Oxford University and Tarek El-Diwany, author of The Problem With Interest and editor of Islamic Banking and Finance: What It Is and What It Could Be. This is an essential seminar for finance professionals, scholars, students, businesspeople and Islamic-finance-consumers in particular as well as for anyone who has some interest in this field.

Raising A Muslim Child in The 21st Century
Preparing The Leaders of Tomorrow

Raising righteous, bright and confident children is a concern and a challenge for every Muslim parent. The challenge is multiplied by the turbulent and toxic environment, such as has never been witnessed before, with the convergence of consumerism, promiscuity, education, technology and popular culture. Unfortunately this challenge is too overwhelming for many Muslim parents that they decide to "go with the flow" like everyone else. This is so because they don't realise that they have something with them that could not only help them withstand the greatest of challenges but also (more importantly) change the environment to one which is conducive to raising righteous, bright and confident children.

The previous brilliant seminar 21st Century Children - Raising Boys & Girls in The Modern World by Sue Palmer (Author of Toxic Childhood) highlighted the major issues that any parent should be concerned about in bringing up children in the modern world. The forthcoming seminar Raising A MUSLIM CHILD in The 21st Century - Preparing The Leaders of Tomorrow by Shaykh Dr Mohammed Akram Nadwi deals with more deeper issues and gives specific guidance for Muslims in a way that has never been done before in the English language. Undoubtedly this seminar is more important for the Muslims because it focuses on raising children who would not only withstand challenges but actually help eradicate those challenges (as the leaders of tomorrow) in a way that was exemplified and envisaged by our father Ibrahim (AS) thousands of years ago and showed by our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in even more detail as the seal of the prophets.

So if you are concerned about raising children in the modern world and particularly in the West then register today for this groundbreaking seminar to be held in less than one week's time to explore the basic yet profound teachings of all of the messengers and particularly of Ibrahim (AS) and Muhammad (PBUH) in how to raise righteous, bright and confident children in the 21st century.

Exploring The Pearls of The Qur'an
Detailed Study of Al-Fatiha & The Last Ten Surahs
Their Coherence, Meaning & Universal Message

Al Fatiha and the last ten surahs are parts of the Qur’an which would be familiar to us all. Often the first surahs to be memorised and regularly recited in prayers, they are the smallest of surahs in length yet they are vast in their meaning. Al Fatiha is the Mother of the Qur’an and is a pillar of our prayer and among the last ten surahs are those which are likened to a third of the Qur’an . Each surah is perfect and complete in itself, yet it is beautifully connected with the others to form a meaningful and coherent whole. Together they give us pearls of essential knowledge and precious insights into the purpose of our lives. This seminar will explore these surahs of the Qur’an in depth, studying their magnificent words and their amazing coherence and extracting invaluable lessons to apply in our lives today. This seminar will moreover help to uplift and enrich our hearts with the words of Allah, to regain our connection with the Qur’an and to strengthen our prayers, the key to all our other good deeds. Without a doubt, the Pearls of the Qur’an is a seminar which one cannot afford to miss.

LEGACY OF IBRAHIM
The Universal Model for Families & Nations

“Abraham was indeed a nation, devoutly obedient to God, true in Faith, and he joined not partners with God” Qura'n 16:120
“So follow the religion of Abraham, the upright” Qur'an 3:95
“Indeed there has been an excellent example for you in Abraham and those with him” Qur’an 60:4

Why is Prophet Ibrahim called a “nation” although he was only one man? Why are we asked to follow the religion of Ibrahim when we have the religion of Prophet Muhammad? Why are we asked to take the example of Ibrahim when we have the example of Prophet Muhammad? How are they linked together? How did he bring up his family and how did they respond to that? What was his vision and strategy for the future for building great nations?

Register today for this amazing seminar which explores the life and legacy of Prophet Ibrahim and his family, and draws valuable and practical lessons for individuals, families and nations to follow universally.

"I have been fortunate enough to attend some of the classes given by Shaykh Mohammed Akram Nadwi in Oxford, Cambridge and London, and I would certainly recommend them to anyone seeking to increase their understanding of the sciences of Islam. Masha'Allah, Shaykh Akram's knowledge is both broad and deep, his training is traditional, his presentation is lively and relevant to our lives today, and one feels that his intention is truly to raise the level of every Muslim. His work on the women scholars of Islam is timely and inspirational, revealing the little-known fact that many thousands of women scholars were involved in developing and maintaining the tradition of scholarship in Islam. This was the case right from the earliest community in Madina until only about 200 years ago. Shaykh Akram makes sure that his knowledge is accessible to all seekers, regardless of gender, in the most correct and generous way, and his courses thus contribute to restoring a balance and harmony. May Allah bless him and preserve him. The courses planned for Cambridge are an opportunity not to be missed!" - Aziza Spiker, Cambridge

Ramadhan I'tikaf 10-Day Retreat with Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi at the Cambridge Mosque

Update: You can now access the lessons live online worldwide. Please see bottom of this page for details.

It is related on the authority of Aisha (RA) that "The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) observed I’tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadhan, till the end of his life. After his death his wives continued with it." [Bukhari and Muslim]

Assalaamu 'Alaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakaathuh

We are pleased to announce the Ramadhan Iʿtikāf 10-Day Retreat with Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi at the Cambridge Mosque this year for both men and women. This spiritually uplifting and intellectually enlightening programme is a unique opportunity to make the most of the last 10 days of Ramadhan in worship, study and contemplation, in the company of the angels and pious in the house of Allah, following the blessed Sunnah of our beloved Prophet (PBUH), his companions and the mothers of the believers.

The purpose of Iʿtikāf is to cut oneself off from day-to-day distractions and devote oneself to worship (‘ibaadah), remembrance (dhikr), supplication (dua’) and Qur’an. Alhamdulillah we are privileged to be having Shaykh Mohammad Akram Nadwi with us during the I’tikaf to guide us in this spiritual journey and give us beneficial reminders throughout. InshaAllah, the shaykh will be sharing gems from the Qur’an, the Hadith and the biographies of the righteous with unique and fresh insights based on years of scholarship, vast experience and deep personal reflections.

There are no fees involved with this programme but we encourage everyone to be charitable in this blessed time and donate generously to the hosts, Cambridge Mosque and MEOC, for welcoming us, maintaining the facilities and providing suhoor and iftar.

We would love to have as many people as possible taking part but there are restrictions on the number of people the mosque can accommodate and cater for. Therefore, to be considered for the Iʿtikāf programme, please register as soon as possible by completing the form below. Please provide as much information as possible to enable us to select those people with the highest interest in the event of the programme being oversubscribed.

The Programme Schedule: (BST - British Summer Time)

Morning Session - 10.30AM - 12.30PM
Shaykh Akram will be going through the tafsir and reflections on Surah Al-An'am. Surah Al-An'am is a very important Meccan surah that makes plain it is God who creates, controls and sees everything, and that it is to Him that we turn in times of need. This session will also include question and answers.

Afternoon Session - 2.30PM - 4.30PM
In this session Shaykh Akram will go through several classical works. This includes Seyed al-Khatir of Imam Ibn al-Jawzi on purification of the heart, sharpening the mind, strengthening ones resolve and learning from experience. There will also be some reminders from the poetry of Maulana Rumi and Muhammad Iqbal on the love of God and servitude to Him.

The other part of this session will be spent on the study of the biographies of the pious and the righteous from Siyar a`lam al-nubala' (The Lives of Noble Figures) of Imam Al-Dhahabi.

The rest of the time is spent in worship (‘ibaadah), remembrance (dhikr), supplication (dua’) and Qur’an. The attendees will also have the opportunity to ask general and personal questions from the Shaykh.

We ask that Allah (SWT) make this effort sincerely for Him and that He makes this a source of blessing and benefit for us.

Jazakumullahu Khair
