What follows is a taste of what is to come in the first of the seminars in the Introduction to Classical Islamic Texts Diploma. One of the areas that would be discussed in the Sahih Al-Bukhari Seminar is how well the modern scholars and academics understood (or misunderstood) the methodology, research, academic rigour and the thinking of Imam Bukhari.

In this respect Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi states: "Bukhari’s thorough research about hadith narrators included knowing and understanding which hadiths they had preserved well. He accepts from them only those hadiths and not the rest. For example, Ma`mar is an imam, and he narrates many hadiths from A`mash who was one of the six pillars of hadith. However, because Ma`mar did not preserve the hadiths of A`mash so well, Bukhari does not record any hadith with this isnad. Yet, we find, in our time, people like Sh. Ahmad Muhammad Shakir, Sh. Nasir al-Din al-Albani and others not only accept the hadiths of Ma`mar from A`mash but also classify them as “sahih on the condition of Bukhari”. No doubt Ma`mar and A`mash are both among the principal narrators in Sahih al-Bukhari, but this particular link, Ma`mar from A`mash, did not satisfy Bukhari’s conditions.
There are some frequently occurring isnads in Sahih al-Bukhari, for example: al-A`mash -- Abu Salih -- Abu Hurayrah. It is said that A`mash heard one thousand hadiths from Abu Salih. Even so, Bukhari does not narrate all the hadiths with this isnad because, in some of them, he is not convinced that A`mash got them directly from Abu Salih: he has reasons to think that that there must be a missing link which is not known. Yet, again, we find many contemporary scholars, when they see a hadith with this isnad that Bukhari has excluded from his Sahih, rushing to classify it as “sahih on the condition of Bukhari." [Form the Course Notes to Sahih Al-Bukhari - Classical Islamic Texts Diploma]

"This famous work was intended as a criticism of the principles and doctrines of Greek philosophy as applied by, notably, Ibn Sina and al-Farabi to Islamic teachings. The book was well received and considered a successful proof of the incoherence of the philosophers. Ghazali criticises the philosophers on 20 issues, among which three are serious enough to have merited the accusation of unbelief. We will discuss how well Ghazali demonstrates the incoherence of the philosophers, and Ibn Rushd’s equally famous response in Tahafut al-Tahafut (Incoherence of the Incoherence)." - Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi [Introduction to Classical Islamic Texts Diploma]

"Maulana Hamiduddin Farahi (d. 1930) devoted most of his life to study the Qur'an. An erudite scholar, Farahi commanded knowledge of a number of languages, among them Hebrew and English. Among his books are: Mufradat al Quran (Vocabulary of the Quran), Asalib al Quran (Style of the Quran) Jamharat al-Balaghah (Manual of Quranic Rhetoric) and Iman fi Aqsam il Qur'an (Study of the Quranic Oaths). Farahi's main contribution in the field of Qur'anic studies has been the development of the theory of Niẓām ie thematic unity; every chapter of the Qurʾān has a specific theme around which all elements of the chapter are woven. According to the concept of niẓām, the Qur’an being coherent means that it has an overall theme, each chapter has a theme, and the whole book and every chapter of it are connected in how they present those themes. In other words, niẓām refers to the order of the Qurʾān, and the sequence of its arguments and statements, in relation to the theme of the whole Qurʾān, then to the order of different groups of chapters, then the order of elements within each sūrah in each group. The course will study the theory in detail in the light of the criticism against it." - Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi [Introduction to Classical Islamic Texts Diploma]

"The main purpose of the the [Classical Islamic Texts Diploma] Programme is to make very clear that our history of scholarship is not only about collecting information but it is more than that - to understand, to think, to analyse, to support, to refute, to debate and to discuss. In our time the Muslim mind has become idle - not thinking, not understanding and they cannot challenge any opinion, they cannot prove anything, they cannot refute anything. Very often in madrassas teachers even don't encourage the students to ask questions, to discuss and to argue a point. So I hope InshaAllah that the people who attend these classes will be able to understands these sciences properly, to think properly and also to understand that this is human knowledge so how we can agree, how we can differ and how we can make arguments based on the sources."- Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi [Introduction to Classical Islamic Texts Diploma]

Introduction to Classical Islamic Texts Diploma kicks off next month with a 2-day seminar on the Introduction to Sahih Al-Bukhari. Many of us have heard about Sahih Al-Bukhari and perhaps also read it but do we really know what Sahih Bukhari is?

We marvel at the sophistication of modern research, scientific inquiry and academic rigour but do we know how much more sophisticated the methodology and research of Imam Bukhari is? Do we know how much more academic Imam Bukhari is?

This is your opportunity to get to know Imam Bukhari is his Sahih more closely with this historic diploma programme by Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi - one of the foremost scholars, researchers and thinkers in the world today.

“We have to first appreciate and understand what the Muslim scholars have done because we do not really know this. People say “Bukhari” but they don’t know what Sahih Bukhari means. People say “Sahih Muslim” but they don’t understand what it means. People mention the name of Waliullah Dehlawi but they don’t understand his contribution. So what we are going to do in this programme is to introduce to you these people and their works and show how sophisticated their methodology is, how great their minds are and how big their thinking is. These people are the mujtahideen or the thinkers of Islam and we will learn and understand what they have been doing in this programme. This programme will also help us not take our religion as something superficial, and not to take the Islamic sciences as something at the surface. Islamic sciences are much deeper and we have to go deep. At the end of the programme you will not become an expert of Hadith or Fiqh or Tafsir but it will at least push you in that direction. It will help you to realise that we need to do much effort to at least understand them. So if you cannot produce a work like Bukhari at least you should understand what he has done. If you cannot produce a work like Waliullah Dehlawi at least you should be able to understand what he has done. No doubt once you do this it will help you to produce works that would be useful in your own context.” - Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi [Introduction to Classical Islamic Texts Diploma]

"This work records an early view of universal history. Some modern scholars regard it as the first work on the philosophy of history and a pioneer in such disciplines as sociology, demography, historiography, cultural history, and economics. It also deals with Islamic theology, law, political theory and the natural sciences of biology and chemistry. Ibn Khaldun wrote the work in 1377 as the Preface or first book of his planned world history, but already in his lifetime it became regarded as an independent work. The course will provide a critical introduction of the work." - Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi [Introduction to Classical Islamic Texts Diploma]

"Perhaps the most important and influential Muslim thinker and revivalist after Ibn Taymiyyah was Shah Waliullah al-Muhaddith al-Dihlawi. In this course we will cover: Shah Waliullah’s life, his efforts of reviving the hadith and hadith sciences in 18th century India, his teachings and writings. Most part of the course will involve a comprehensive and thorough introduction to his magnum opus Hujjatullah al-Balighah, which deals with the development of human societies, human need for guidance, the development of Islamic sciences, history of the legal schools, causes of the differences, the wisdom of shari`ah, and an intellectual interpretation of hadith, comparison with earlier writings on these subjects; and Shah Waliullah’s legacy in India and beyond. - Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi [Introduction to Classical Islamic Texts Diploma]

We will study a few hadeeths in great detail to demonstrate how thoroughly and consistently Bukhari applied his criteria for authenticating the chain of narrators reporting the hadeeth; how detached he was from any considerations of sect and creed; his estimation of sound hadeeths as being sufficient to guide the practice of Islam; and the method, and meaning for fiqh, of his notes and chapter headings.

"Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has given us various faculties for various purposes - for example eyes to see, ears to hear and mouth to speak. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has also given us a mind to think. But unfortunately many people do not think or worse they want other people to think for them in both worldly matters and religious matters. This is a serious abuse of the blessing that Allah has given us." - Dr Mohammed Akram Nadwi

Muslims are supposed to be thinkers! One of the greatest thinkers in the history of mankind is our father Ibrahim 'alayhi as-salaam who our own Prophet Muhammad sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam and his followers have been commanded to emulate. The whole of the story of Ibrahim 'alayhi as-salaam - from his childhood to old age - is about his quest to think and to search for answers. So deep is his thinking that he asked Allah the ultimate question of how He resurrects the dead because he wanted to understand to strengthen and satisfy his conviction. This is the powerful example of the beloved of Allah - Khalilullah - who used the mind the way it should be used. On the contrary people are misguided and misled because they do not use their mind to think. <<And they shall say: Had we but listened or pondered (used the mind or 'aql), we should not have been among the inmates of the burning fire.>> [Qur'an 67:10]

The whole of the Qur'an urges humankind to think, to understand, to reflect, to explore, to ponder and to use their intelligence. It also teaches us how to do that. So there is no better way to develop the use of our mind than to use the Qur'an itself.<<(This is) a Scripture that We have revealed unto thee, full of blessing, that they may ponder its revelations, and that people of understanding may reflect.>> [Qur'an 38:29]. <<Then do they not reflect upon the Qur'an? If it had been from [any] other than Allah , they would have found within it much contradiction.>> [Qur'an 4:82]

So how do you do this? This is your opportunity to learn how to think for yourself using the most read part of the Qur'an - Juz' Amma. You will discover the amazing depth and the breadth of these short surahs along with the secrets of how to arrive at this level of understanding in this first-of-its-kind series by Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi.
"Jazakumullahu khayran. I can't thank you enough for the opportunity. I am so impressed by the Sheikh, subhanallah, mashaAllah. A very rare example of tradition fused with awareness of the environment and reality while not compromising God consciousness. If only there were more like him. Questions, I'm so glad we can ask them even if it's not about the sura. Yes, how else are we to learn from his wisdom and experience if we don't ask? The issues facing Muslims in the West are so many and so confusing and I just love the fact that he does not have an inferiority complex about Islam. It's really sad to see psychologically defeated scholars start throwing away tradition in the name of progress and fitting in. Sheikh Akram Nadwi gives you the sense that the real life is in the hereafter so don't have to get so tied up with the philosophies and controversies that sometimes take away our attention from the real purpose. The onus is on us, are we being pious?" - Aisha Barkatulla, Cambridge

"I recently attended the Tafsir of Surah Nuh. Whilst I had heard much about Shaykh Akram, this was my first class with him. The first thing that you cannot help but appreciate is how the Shaykh hooks you with his connection to knowledge, in a pure sense, there was no need to employ any speaking tactics to keep the attendees engrossed. The Shaykh, made every point relevant, to connect the text with our lives today and our response to get closer to our Creator. Indeed the Shaykh mentioned countless gems that he mentioned offhand but when contemplated on, really struck a chord in the heart. It was also great that the Shaykh was very open to questions, however sensitive, and tackled them head on, without compromising the principles of our faith, exemplifying that Allah azza wa jal has not only blessed him with knowledge, but also wisdom. I don't say this lightly, I genuinely believe, if you have the opportunity to study with the Shaykh, and you don't take it, then you have missed out on tasting the fruits of the knowledge of the Scholarship of our time and land" - Umer Suleman, South London

The vast majority of people today claim they do not believe in God. Most of those who do claim to believe in God either believe in an anthropomorphic (human-like) god, as do Christians and Hindus, or they believe in an abstract god, the way philosophers and scientists believe, where they argue and put forward theories for "the concept of god" and "the existence of god". But the God of Muslims is neither anthropomorphic nor philosophic (abstract). Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi says the God that Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam, and all the other Prophets and Messengers called people to believe in and to worship was a real God with whom people could have a real and intimate relationship such as could not be had with any of the creation of God.

But today, we Muslims have also fallen into the same problems as others. We sometimes fall into anthropomorphism by expecting God to behave like human beings, as it happens when we require God to have intermediaries between us and Him "because we are so low and God is so high". Or we turn God into philosophical abstracts and theological concepts in the name of "aqeedah" or theology. Since these abstractions and concepts can have different perspectives, we now have different schools of "knowing God" such as the Salafi, Ash'ari and Maturidi. But, as Dr Nadwi asks, is this really what the Prophets and Messengers came to teach us about God?
"It is very clear that Eeman has been replaced by Aqeedah, Islam by Madhab and Ihsan & Tazkiyyah by Tasawwuf. This is the biggest problem for Muslims today." - Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi

How do we then know Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala?

<<[Prophet], glorify the name of your Lord the Most High, who created [all things] in due proportion; who determined their destinies and guided them; who brought out the green pasture then made it dark debris.>> [Surah Al-A'laa 87:1-5]

<<Prosperous are those who purify themselves, remember the name of their Lord, and pray. Yet you [people] prefer the life of this world, even though the Hereafter is better and more lasting.>> [Surah Al-A'laa 87:14-17]

Surah Al-A'laa gives us a hint as to how we can know God, and the surah following it - Surah Al-Ghashiyah - tells us that this means serious business because the consequences of not wanting to know God are very severe.

<<So [Prophet] warn them: your only task is to give warning, you are not there to control them. As for those who turn away and disbelieve, God will inflict the greatest torment upon them. It is to Us they will return, and then it is for Us to call them to account.>> [Surah Al-Ghashiyah 88:21-24]

"We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them." - Albert Einstein

There are always a few extraordinary people who think differently to the rest and come up with solutions to problems. This can be witnessed throughout the history of mankind and it almost always relates to material progress. These are solutions to the "little problems" of human beings.

But what would be ever puzzling is when the human being himself is the problem. In this case, no human mind would be capable of coming up with the solution as the thinking used would be the same as that which created the problem in the first place. Every thinker, philosopher, reformer, politician and academic has his own prejudices and self-interests.Hence he could never be impartial and independent and he could never understand the problem and any solutions he comes up with would always be superficial and flawed.

<<And when it is said to them, "Do not cause corruption on the earth," they say, "We are but reformers." Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive [it] not.>> [Qur'an 2:11-12]

How then can we find solutions to our "big problems"? According to Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi, the only way the "big problems" of human beings can be addressed is if the solutions came from an external source to human beings. In other words, we need revelation and guidance from God - the Creator and Provider of all human beings.

So what really is the biggest problem of mankind?

<<He has certainly succeeded who purifies himself and mentions the name of his Lord and prays. But you prefer the worldly life, while the Hereafter is better and more enduring. Indeed, this is in the former scriptures, The scriptures of Abraham and Moses.>> [Surah Al-A'laa 87:14-19]

The end of Surah Al-A'laa informs us about our biggest problem - "you prefer the worldly life while the Hereafter is better and more enduring". This is not only the biggest problem but also the universal problem as it applies to all times and places - hence it is in all scriptures.

These verses also offer us the universal solution - 1. purification of the self, 2. remembering our Lord and 3. prayer. The whole of this surah, Surah Al-A'laa, and the next - Surah Al-Ghashiyah, give a beautiful elaboration of these important points.
"The Magnificent Journey continues... Today's seminar was yet another awesome seminar in the series with an exceptional crowd and amazing insights from Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi. This is truly a historic series of seminars on the explanation of The Qur'an, redefining our understanding and relationship with the Book of ALLAH. The emphasis of Dr Nadwi on establishing our connection with ALLAH and utilising the space given to us for recognising one God is the key highlight of these seminars. Each seminar begins by strongly negating the wrong practices which have been introduced into the true teachings of worshipping one ALLAH, and then builds on it by inviting us to ponder on the signs of ALLAH and get closer to our Rabb. Truly inspiring series, I would strongly recommend everybody including men, women and families to attend the Magnificent Journey Seminars as these are life-changing and truly instill in us the urge to love the Book of ALLAH. The subtle nuances of the language which make the Qur'an such a powerful speech are beautifully explained by Dr Akram Nadwi in a nice balanced way keeping things simple and interesting at the same time. When someone like Shaykh Akram speaks and explains things the way he does, you know that anyone who is not benefiting from him will look back in 10 years and think, man I totally lost out there. You may know a topic inside out but because of the depth of his knowledge and more importantly his understanding, when he explains something you are thrown back by how he explained it in a way you never heard it before. MashaAllah. These courses are essential for every Muslim. If people are sincere about seeking knowledge that will connect them to their Creator, Allah (SWT), then they will take full advantage as they will not only help one understand their purpose in life in a deeper and more meaningful way but they will also be in a strong position to articulate Islam to the people around them in a way that makes sense and appeals the the hearts and minds.” - Tariq Shaekh, London

Living as a Muslim Minority in the East or the West can be very challenging and difficult but yet at the same time it can be one of the greatest blessings, opportunities and strengths for the Muslims. According to Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi, the best of the Muslims were formed when they were living as a minority in Makkah under the harshest of conditions. These include Abu Bakr As-Siddique, Omar Al-Farooque, Othman ibn Al-Affan and 'Ali ibn Abi Talib. The world has never seen the likes of them after. They emerged from a Muslim minority.

<<God will be well pleased with the first emigrants and helpers and those who followed them in good deeds, and they will be well pleased with Him: He has prepared Gardens graced with flowing streams for them, there to remain for ever. That is the supreme triumph.>> [Qur'an 9:100]

Today we think that it would be better for Islam and Muslims to have power, authority, wealth and glory. But this is not necessarily the case. We can readily realise this if we look at our history and the current condition of the Muslims.

However, are the Muslims living as minorities today like their predecessors? Some are said to be "assimilated" with the society - i.e. same as everyone else; others are said to be "isolated" from the society - i.e. they form their own mini societies within the larger society and yet others are said to be "integrated" - i.e. they are like the rest in some aspects and unlike in other aspects. But were the early Muslims in any of these three categories? Understanding this is key to living as effective and strong Muslim minorities (and Muslim majorities) and be of those whom Allah refers to as "those who followed them in good deeds".

Today the main concern of the Muslims, sadly, is to try to restore the former glory. This entails resentments, even hatred for those who took away that glory from Muslims. In this regard Muslims became confused and self-contradictory – they want the power of the enemies of Islam, while wishing to be unlike them. Who is Behind It?

Opposition to Islam is as old as Islam itself. Whenever a Prophet or Messenger came to a nation inviting to the worship of Allah and His obedience, there was always a group of people (generally the elite of the society) who would oppose them. This opposition to the Prophets and Messengers was rooted in pride, arrogance, racism, tradition and a lack of thinking. It was rarely the case that the cause of this opposition was ignorance or misunderstanding of the message. The Prophets and Messengers of Allah made the utmost effort to convey the message of Islam plainly and clearly to the people.

Today too Islam continues to be attacked and Muslims the world over are experiencing opposition in various forms. In Europe we have seen the banning of niqab as well as headscarves in public institutions; the activities of the English Defence League in the UK; the media's disrespect of the Prophet Muhammad, sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam and more. In Asia, there has been the targeting of “halal” products and Muslim businesses by Bodu Bala Sena (Buddhist Force Legion) in Sri Lanka and the anti-Muslim campaigns of Shiv Sena (Shiva God’s Legion) in India. Vilification of Islam carries on through the internet by Evangelical Christians in the USA. The list continues with the onslaught against Islam by “militant” atheists such as Richards Dawkins and the late Christopher Hitchens, not to forget the popular pro-Zionist “islamophobes” such as Daniel Pipes and Douglas Murray.

We would like to think that the current opposition shares the same roots as the opposition faced by the blessed Prophets and Messengers. But is that really the case? Today it is most often the case that people oppose Islam and Muslims out of ignorance and misunderstanding of the message of Islam, an ignorance which is only furthered by the bad character and unworthy example of the Muslims themselves. It is not necessarily due to pride, arrogance, racism, tradition or a lack of thinking. Who is then responsible for this opposition? Is the main cause of Islamophobia the Muslims themselves?

Of the many misunderstood aspects of Islam that have contributed towards Islamophobia, the greatest confusion appears to lie in the subject of Shariah Law, Islamic State and Jihad. This is as true for Muslims as it is for non-Muslims. Coming up on the 8th of February in London & Online Worldwide is a key seminar that explains the whole issue of Shariah Law, Islamic State & Jihad in a way that has never been explained before in the English language.

Whether it be about the activities of Jamat-e-Islami in Pakistan and Bangladesh or the Ikhwan Al-Muslimeen (Muslim Brotherhood) in Egypt or the Hizb Ut-Tahrir and its offshoots in the UK, "Political Islam" is always in the news. These groups and parties are generally seen as a threat to the establishment or as a menace to the public and a cause of radicalisation of young Muslims. Consequently they are either outlawed or suppressed in many countries.

Muslims are divided about them. Some see them as their heroes who are carrying out the mission of "establishing the Shariah", bringing back the power and glory of the past, challenging the establishment and ultimately re-establishing the Khilafah that was lost in 1924 as some claim. Others see them as a lost cause and a reactionary movement not dissimilar to any secular political organisation in their goals and methods except superficially, creating even more problems for the Muslims and hindering the spread of the message of Islam. Yet others see them as dangerous entities whose ideologies are an inspiration to many militant organisations such as Al-Qaeda and Jam'atul Jihad.

So what is the reality? Is "Political Islam" rooted in the teachings of the Prophets and Messengers of God or is it rooted in the teachings of modern muslim revivalist leaders such as Syed Qutb and Abul A'la Maududi? How do we know whether the rise of "Political Islam" is a curse or a blessing for the Muslims? No doubt this calls for a deeper understanding of the Islamic view on Shariah Law, Islamic State and Jihad.

Muslim communities in the UK and every other part of the world are already polarised on various issues including differences in schools of thought, ideologies, sects, languages and ethnicity. Recent events have polarised Muslims further into two groups of "Secular Muslims" and "Islamist Muslims". This division is quite unique because it is something which has the keen interest of the media and politicians as well as the wider public. The apparent defining criteria between the two groups is whether one "believes" or does not "believe" in Shariah Law, Islamic State and Jihad. Many Muslims would not want to be identified as either "Secular Muslims" or "Islamist Muslims". But their dilemma then appears very puzzling - what should their stance be on Shariah Law, Islamic State and Jihad?. The fact of the matter is that things are not as straightforward as either "Secular Muslims" or "Islamist Muslims" would have it. To ask whether one "believes" or does not "believe" in Shariah Law, Islamic State and Jihad is too simplistic, narrow-minded, shallow and, moreover, stupid. It is as stupid as if someone were to say "Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists"!

So what is the "third way"? Is it to be a "Secular Islamist Muslim"(!) ? No doubt this is a very confusing and troubling issue for many of us and it becomes even more so when some scholars and preachers who are themselves confused speak with incoherence and ignorance of the realities.
