Being a parent or a teacher is not an easy task. The stress, worry and
frustration that comes with looking after children can easily make many a
parent or teacher angry and 'mad'. They know that this is harmful
for themselves and especially for the children. Yet they simply loose
control in difficult situations and seem unable to stop themselves.
There is no doubt that anger and rage are destructive and poisonous for one's own mind, heart and body. They can also severely affect those around us, both psychologically and physically. Therefore when a man said to the Prophet sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam, "Advise me!" The Prophet sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam said, "Do not become angry and furious." The man asked the same again and then a third time, and the Prophet sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam said in each case, "Do not become angry and furious." That is how bad anger, fury and rage are.
So how does one control his or her stress and anger especially when it comes to people under one's care such as children and students? Sadly this does not come naturally for many people. They need to be trained as it requires both will and skill. The Prophet sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam said, "The strong is not the one who overcomes the people by his strength, but the strong is the one who controls himself while in anger".
The seminar coming up on Sunday 18th August with an Islamic scholar and a psychiatrist is an ideal opportunity to learn how to acquire this strength. Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi is a remarkable Islamic scholar who has mastered the art of managing stress and anger. Dr Muhammad Zeyn Green-Thompson is a consultant psychiatrist and Cambridge University researcher who has extensive experience in this subject.
