[Classical Text Diploma] Imam Bukhari, Sh Al-Albani & Sh Ahmed Shakir

What follows is a taste of what is to come in the first of the seminars in the Introduction to Classical Islamic Texts Diploma. One of the areas that would be discussed in the Sahih Al-Bukhari Seminar is how well the modern scholars and academics understood (or misunderstood) the methodology, research, academic rigour and the thinking of Imam Bukhari.

In this respect Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi states:  "Bukhari’s thorough research about hadith narrators included knowing and understanding which hadiths they had preserved well. He accepts from them only those hadiths and not the rest. For example, Ma`mar is an imam, and he narrates many hadiths from A`mash who was one of the six pillars of hadith. However, because Ma`mar did not preserve the hadiths of A`mash so well, Bukhari does not record any hadith with this isnad. Yet, we find, in our time, people like Sh. Ahmad Muhammad Shakir, Sh. Nasir al-Din al-Albani and others not only accept the hadiths of Ma`mar from A`mash but also classify them as “sahih on the condition of Bukhari”. No doubt Ma`mar and A`mash are both among the principal narrators in Sahih al-Bukhari, but this particular link, Ma`mar from A`mash, did not satisfy Bukhari’s conditions.
There are some frequently occurring isnads in Sahih al-Bukhari, for example: al-A`mash -- Abu Salih -- Abu Hurayrah. It is said that A`mash heard one thousand hadiths from Abu Salih. Even so, Bukhari does not narrate all the hadiths with this isnad because, in some of them, he is not convinced that A`mash got them directly from Abu Salih: he has reasons to think that that there must be a missing link which is not known. Yet, again, we find many contemporary scholars, when they see a hadith with this isnad that Bukhari has excluded from his Sahih, rushing to classify it as “sahih on the condition of Bukhari."  [Form the Course Notes to Sahih Al-Bukhari - Classical Islamic Texts Diploma]

"This is the first comprehensive and coherent exposition of the objectives of Shari`ah. We will give a detailed introduction to this work and explain its contemporary relevance, how it has been misread in some respects by many Muslims (and non-Muslims), with emphasis on recent misunderstanding and misapplication of the concept of maqasid." - Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi [Introduction to Classical Islamic Texts Diploma]

“I have been studying the Islamic sciences via online courses for years (as we don't have any traditionally trained scholars in my city) and am hoping this unique programme will be the first step in on a steady road towards becoming an Islamic scholar, so that I may benefit the Muslims of Denmark, in sha' Allah.” -  Said Allan Bak, Odense, Denmark

[Classical Text Diploma] The Incoherence of The Philosophers

Tahāfut al Falāsifa | Muḥammad al-Ghazālī

"This famous work was intended as a criticism of the principles and doctrines of Greek philosophy as applied by, notably, Ibn Sina and al-Farabi to Islamic teachings. The book was well received and considered a successful proof of the incoherence of the philosophers. Ghazali criticises the philosophers on 20 issues, among which three are serious enough to have merited the accusation of unbelief. We will discuss how well Ghazali demonstrates the incoherence of the philosophers, and Ibn Rushd’s equally famous response in Tahafut al-Tahafut (Incoherence of the Incoherence)." - Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi [Introduction to Classical Islamic Texts Diploma]

What are the students saying.....

“Whilst I have had an interest in the Islamic Sciences for a number of years, al-hamdulillah, I noticed that due to the lack of long-term structure – a key component – the extent of my progression was limited. Cambridge Islamic Sciences have consistently offered seminars and courses where Shaykh Akram’s teaching has been structured and coherent. This is a fabulous opportunity to study with Shaykh Akram; and one I hope I do not miss, insha’Allah!” - Sajid, Derby, UK  [Classical Islamic Texts Diploma Student]

[Classical Text Diploma] The Mind-boggling Coherence in The Qur'an

Niẓām al Qur'ān | Ḥamīduddīn Farāhī

"Maulana Hamiduddin Farahi (d. 1930) devoted most of his life to study the Qur'an. An erudite scholar, Farahi commanded knowledge of a number of languages, among them Hebrew and English. Among his books  are: Mufradat al Quran (Vocabulary of the Quran), Asalib al Quran (Style of the Quran) Jamharat al-Balaghah (Manual of Quranic Rhetoric) and Iman fi Aqsam il Qur'an (Study of the Quranic Oaths). Farahi's main contribution in the field of Qur'anic studies has been the development of the theory of Niẓām ie thematic unity; every chapter of the Qurʾān has a specific theme around which all elements of the chapter are woven. According to the concept of niẓām, the Qur’an being coherent means that it has an overall theme, each chapter has a theme, and the whole book and every chapter of it are  connected in how they present those themes. In other words, niẓām refers to the order of the Qurʾān, and the sequence of its arguments and statements, in relation to the theme of the whole Qurʾān, then to the order of different groups of chapters, then the order of elements within each sūrah in each group. The course will study the theory in detail in the light of the criticism against it." - Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi [Introduction to Classical Islamic Texts Diploma]

What are the students saying.....

“Firstly, it is a one-off opportunity to learn knowledge which is hard to come by anywhere else in English and taught by one of the best Muhaddith of our time. I heard Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan speak highly of Shaykh Mohammad Akram Nadwi recently and really am honoured to be able to learn from him. I really look forward to having my thoughts expanded and guided by the Shaykh as I want to be able to make changes in my own family, beginning with my children in the future and as a future teacher inshaAllah, and do not want them to have the same problems I and so many people I know have; due to fear of saying or thinking something wrong, we choose not to think much for ourselves but the Qur'an encourages thinking.” -  Sharmin C, London, UK [Classical Islamic Texts Diploma Student]

[Classical Text Diploma] Orientalists Baffled by Imam Shafie's Risalah

"I know many orientalists who study this work find it very hard to believe such an advanced work could have been done so early on in the history of Islam. But we have manuscripts of al-Risala written by Imam Shafie's students." - Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi

Why are the orientalists from the top universities of the world baffled by al-Risalah? What make al-Risalah a unique work in the history of mankind? This is your opportunity to get to know Imam Shafie and his Risala more closely with this historic diploma programme by Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi - one of the foremost scholars, researchers and thinkers in the world today.

Al-Risāla Introduction: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQzlVRzDK-k

"The main purpose of the the [Classical Islamic Texts Diploma] Programme is to make very clear that our history of scholarship is not only about collecting information but it is more than that - to understand, to think, to analyse, to support, to refute, to debate and to discuss. In our time the Muslim mind has become idle - not thinking, not understanding and they cannot challenge any opinion, they cannot prove anything, they cannot refute anything. Very often in madrassas teachers even don't encourage the students to ask questions, to discuss and to argue a point. So I hope InshaAllah that the people who attend these classes will be able to understands these sciences properly, to think properly and also to understand that this is human knowledge so how we can agree, how we can differ and how we can make arguments based on the sources."- Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi [Introduction to Classical Islamic Texts Diploma]
