The “Secular Muslim" Vs The “Islamist Muslim"

Muslim communities in the UK and every other part of the world are already polarised on various issues including differences in schools of thought, ideologies, sects, languages and ethnicity. Recent events have polarised Muslims further into two groups of "Secular Muslims" and "Islamist Muslims". This division is quite unique because it is something which has the keen interest of the media and politicians as well as the wider public. The apparent defining criteria between the two groups is whether one "believes" or does not "believe" in Shariah Law, Islamic State and Jihad. The struggle between these two groups continues, somewhat violently in the Muslim world and relatively mildly in the West.

Many Muslims would not want to be identified as either "Secular Muslims" or "Islamist Muslims". But their dilemma then appears very puzzling - what should their stance be on Shariah Law, Islamic State and Jihad?. The fact of the matter is that things are not as straightforward as either "Secular Muslims" or "Islamist Muslims" would have it. To ask whether one "believes" or does not "believe" in Shariah Law, Islamic State and Jihad is too simplistic, narrow-minded, shallow and, moreover, stupid. It is as stupid as if someone were to say "Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists"!

So what is the "third way"? Is it to be a "Secular Islamist Muslim"(!) ? No doubt this is a very confusing and troubling issue for many of us and it becomes even more so when some scholars and preachers who are themselves confused speak with incoherence and ignorance of the realities.

Coming up on the 8th of February in London & Online Worldwide is a key seminar that explains the whole issue of Shariah Law, Islamic State & Jihad in a way that has never been explained before in the English language. Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi will address these issues head-on in the light of Qur'anic paradigms, prophetic thinking, historical lessons and current context.
