“Abraham was indeed a nation, devoutly obedient to God, true in Faith, and he joined not partners with God” [Qur'an 16:120]. “So follow the religion of Abraham, the upright” [Qur'an 3:95]. “Indeed there has been an excellent example for you in Abraham and those with him” [Qur’an 60:4]

Why is Prophet Ibrahim called a “nation” although he was only one man? Why are we asked to follow the religion of Ibrahim when we have the religion of Prophet Muhammad? Why are we asked to take the example of Ibrahim when we have the example of Prophet Muhammad? How are they linked together? How did he bring up his family and how did they respond to that? What was his vision and strategy for the future for building great nations? Register today for this amazing seminar which explores the life and legacy of Prophet Ibrahim and his family, and draws valuable and practical lessons for individuals, families and nations to follow universally.

What is The Ideal Education for Your Child?

The biggest concern for most parents today is their children's education. Some parents would sacrifice practically their whole life for this purpose because that is their source of pride in life. But how many parents understand what education really is? For many, education is about doing well in school, going to university and getting a good well-paid job. While there is no doubt that earning a respectable livelihood is important it is also vital to know that a good education is not just that or anything to do with that at all. For how can it be so when it happens that there are parents who have devoted their time, effort and money in "educating" their child and then that same child once "educated" completely disregards and disrespects the parents who "educated" them.

So what really is education and how can a child acquire it? Is schooling and university not education? What about part time Quranic classes - is it education? What about madrassas? What about home-schooling? The answer to these questions is not straightforward because it depends on not just what the child is studying but more importantly how and why the child is studying.

The Qur'an employs what Shaykh Dr Mohammed Akram Nadwi calls the "Immersion Method of Teaching" where the learner is drawn in to be immersed in the context of the message. The Qur'an achieves this by way of stories, parables, metaphors and examples. This method is far superior than any other way because the motivation for understanding and action is generated internally within people themselves. But we employ what is called the "Instruction Method of Teaching" where people are told what to do from the outside. Generally this is the way employed in modern schools and universities. Although this method has its place we extend it far beyond its useful domain and employ it too widely and too frequently. This method is very ineffective for teaching higher human traits such as values, character, creativity, motivation, bravery, love, sympathy, faith, forbearance, thinking, discipline and courage which are the foundations of any great human being.

So how can the parents combine the best ways to give an ideal education for their children?

Please join Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi and Psychiatrist Dr Muhammad Zeyn Green-Thompson in the forthcoming groundbreaking seminar Raising A Muslim Child in The 21st Century - Preparing The Leaders of Tomorrow which will discuss the important but misunderstood issues we have in raising confident, bright and responsible Muslim children in these challenging and turbulent times.

Ancient Secrets of Parenting Revealed in Modern Seminar

"Parenting" is as old as human beings have been living on earth. Therefore the accumulated experience of parenting should be at its highest point at this time. However it is not. Its possible that we have reached the lowest ebb when it comes to parenting and raising confident, bright and responsible children. How is it that when it comes to science and technology we human beings have advanced greatly building on the learning and experience of past generations, but when it comes to something so fundamental as parenting we have fallen far behind.

What are we missing and where have we gone wrong? It appears that we have forgotten some "ancient secret wisdom" holding the keys and the fundamental principles of raising confident, bright and responsible children. Thankfully these "secrets" can still be found. They are preserved in the sacred scriptures and traditions. However it does take a scholar and thinker to find, synthesize and present them to us in a way that we can apply them to our time and place. The seminar coming up this Saturday will reveal these "ancient secrets" so that we can get back on track. You will also have the opportunity to hear what a modern psychiatrist thinks of these "ancient secrets". This is an unmissable seminar for parents, teachers and anyone involved in the welfare of children.

Places are limited. Book your place now for either attendance in London or Online Worldwide.

Throw Away Your Parenting Books!

Raising confident, bright and responsible children in this day and age is no doubt a very big challenge for any parent. It is even more of a challenge for parents to raise confident, bright and responsible Muslim children. Sadly many Muslim parents have no clue of what to do about it and those few who are proactive and motivated look for help and guidance in the wrong place.
Many of the books and seminars on parenting treat "parenting" as something objective - i.e. if anyone follows certain procedures and techniques then they will be able to achieve their objective. However raising children is not objective but it is highly subjective - i.e. dependant on the parents themselves more than procedures and technique. Therefore "Islamic Parenting" requires the parents to 'rectify' themselves first before attempting to 'rectify' their children.

<<O ye who believe! save yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is Men and Stones, over which are (appointed) angels stern (and) severe, who flinch not (from executing) the Commands they receive from Allah, but do (precisely) what they are commanded.>> [Qur'an 66:6]
Allah (SWT) asks us to save ourselves first. If one cannot save themselves then there is very little chance that they can save others. Similarly if one cannot "raise" themselves then there is very little chance that they can raise anyone else including their children.
"The way parents must be is not to say to their children "do as I say" but to say "do as I do". To say to your children "do as I say" is wrong, this is not going to work. The way of the Prophet (SAW) is to say "do as I do". For example the Prophet (SAW) said "do the prayer as you have seen me doing". If I don't pray on time, if I don't pray in congregation, if I don't pray with humility can I say to my child pray as I do? So before I tell my child "do as I do" I should teach myself and do things properly" - Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi

So it is now time to throw away your superficial parenting books and come to the real "parenting" as taught by Allah (SWT) through His Prophets and Messengers. The seminar by Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi is about real, sincere and prophetic parenting that is holistic, integrated and multi-faceted. This is an essential seminar for parents, teachers and anyone involved in the welfare of children. It covers child development & upbringing from an Islamic perspective for people living in the West in a way that has never been covered before.

Raising A Muslim Child: Mobile Phones, Computers, Internet and TV - How Does It Affect?

Many of us are proud of the technology and the comfort the modern world has to offer. However have we ever thought of how these things can affect our physical, intellectual and spiritual well-being? More importantly have we ever thought of how these affect our children?

"Many people don't understand really how the society works. Things which are causes of the problem we think they are treatment of the problem. For example, you think if my children don't behave properly and if I buy for them Iphone, smartphone, this and that then they will become happy. But by doing this you basically increase the problem. How they increase the problem I am going to explain to you clearly. These things really are so much of a problem for the mind....

Now the problem of the modern society is that people are disoriented. Disorientation is the biggest problem. People don't belong to the place where they are so they cannot learn and benefit from each other. Somebody walking down the street with his mobile phone and earphones and talking - you think he is there but he is not there. Similarly somebody travelling on a bus next to you, you think he is next to you but he is not next to you. Your wife or husband is in your house and you think they are with you but they are not with you. Similarly you think your children are in the house and are with you but they are not with you. That is why you see very often parents and children don't have anything in common to talk. Because they never took anything from each other - they both have their ideals somewhere else - they basically don't belong to that place. Now people don't belong to the place where they live. Parents and children they live in the same house but they are not together. Father's mind is somewhere else, mother's mind is somewhere else and children have their own ideals. When they are with the TV, Internet and their Iphones this is what happens. Their ideals do not come from each other but they come from somewhere else.... This is the root of many problems in the society - people are disoriented - they don't belong to the place where they are..." - Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi

The forthcoming seminar on Raising A Muslim Child in The 21st Century - Preparing The Leaders of Tomorrow addresses these deeper issues of child upbringing and development in a way that has never been done before in the English language. Shaykh Akram Nadwi has developed his research and thinking since he did a similar seminar in October 2011. We also have a Cambridge based psychiatrist and researcher contributing to this important topic.

"Don't Take Away The Children's Right To Go Wrong"

"The scholars say that one of the important principles of tarbiyya or Islamic education is: 'don't take away the right of going wrong'. Everybody has the the right to go wrong. You cannot take away this right. Your children have the right to go wrong. Your wife or husband has the right to go wrong. Your friends have the right to go wrong. So it not your duty to make people right. Your duty is only to explain to people but if they want to go wrong let them go wrong. They will learn and come back InshaAllah. So give people proper space, give your children proper space." - Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi

This is a preview of Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi's upcoming seminar Raising A Muslim Child in The Modern World - Preparing The Leaders of Tomorrow coming up on Saturday 12th October in London and Online Worldwide.
