Muslim Education & Outreach Cambridge (MEOC) is pleased announce that it is one of the signatories and part of "a powerful lobby of more than 200 experts" which wrote an Open Letter to the The Telegraph on "The Erosion of Childhood". It was published on the 24th of September 2011. The full letter with the list of signatories can be found below. The outcome of the Open Letter can be found at the bottom of this email.

MEOC is committed to enhancing the quality of childhood and education in the UK. In addition to its series of monthly Islamic seminars MEOC organised its first groundbreaking seminar on childhood by Sue Palmer (the world renowned author of Toxic Childhood) in September 2011. The seminar was titled 21st Century Children - Raising Boys and Girls in The Modern World. This was highly successful and the demand for high quality seminars on childhood seemed ever more greater. Because of the popular demand and the urgent needs MEOC is organising its second groundbreaking seminar on childhood with a focus on Islamic guidance with one of the foremost Islamic scholars and thinkers of the West Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi of the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, Oxford University. The forthcoming seminar on Saturday is titled Raising A Muslim Child in The 21st Century - Preparing The Leaders of Tomorrow. This seminar of course is more important for the Muslims than the previous seminar as it deals with much more deeper issues and practical solutions based on divine guidance.

Testimonials

"Alhamdulillah I've attended 3 seminars of Sheikh Akram's so far, and Insha Allah I will keep coming back for more! He was introduced to me by my brother who attends his study circles regularly in Oxford. I loved the seminar on Women scholars in Islam, it was a total eye opener into what a Muslim woman's role in society is, which surprisingly (or not) goes against many cultiural and conventionally held notions of Muslim women. My other favourite one was the tafseer of Surat al Fatiha and the last ten surahs, I will not be exaggerating when I say that I truly found it mind blowing. Sheikh Akram is an absolute treasure trove of knowledge but Masha Allah he always carries himself with the utmost humility. I have already had a look at the list of future seminars and I think MEOC is doing a great job in giving the layman an opportunity to have an exciting insight into the world of Muslim scholarship with its choice of highly intellectual topics. Last but not least, its a great opportunity to meet new people of diverse backgrounds. Well done all of you and may Allah reward you for your efforts."
- Dr Fathima Shyma Fazal, Boston, Lincolnshire

"As a non Muslim (currently!) I have been delighted by the whole experience of the MEOC lectures and have found them so helpful in my studies and 'quest for the Truth'. I had been doing lots of reading and studying and had started to read the Qur'an and this lecture seemed to come at the perfect time. The whole experience has been well organised, welcoming and informative and the depth and breadth of knowledge of Shaykh Dr Mohammed Akran Nadwi is truly inspiring and motivating. Excellent course delivery with suitable breaks allowing for reflection and brief stretch of legs, plus useful and interactive question and answer sessions. The two lectures I have attended thus far have benefited me enormously and I look forward to more God willing." - Sarah Jarman, Bedford

"Jazakumullah khair for the efforts of the MEOC for arranging these blessed gatherings of knowledge. The seminars I've attended so far have several elements that make them very special, starting from the choice of topics themselves which cater to the more profound needs of the people rather than addressing some superficial issues that seem to be more fashionable today. Even the content of the seminars and the manner of teaching by Shaikh Akram Nadwi are directly focussed towards developing a deeper understanding of these issues. In these seminars, one gets a glimpse of the years of learning that have gone into the brilliant scholarship of Shaikh Nadwi. Furthermore his knowledge seems to be blessed by an acute understanding of the needs of the Ummah. The seminar on the 'Legacy of Ibrahim (a.s.)' was exceptionally beautiful, wherein, the Shaikh in his own words confessed that he was attempting to transmit, not knowledge, but the state of his heart, to the others present. While the knowledge and the insight that one gains into the Qur'an, the Sunnah and the history of Muslims through these seminars is invaluable, I personally feel that these sessions are more than just one-day courses. I am inclined to call them gatherings of Remembrance of Allah, and we all know the blessings of such gatherings!" - Mohini Verma, PhD Student, Cambridge University

How To Nourish The Mind, Body & Spirit (Heart) of A Child?

"Allah has made the whole universe nourishment not only for the body but for the mind and spirit as well so that we can worship Allah not only with our body but with our mind and spirit as well. However many Muslims today can only see the physical or outer layer of information of the universe and they end up worshipping Allah only with their body. This is not true servitude ('uboodiyyah) to Allah and is going against the teachings (millah) of Ibraheem (AS) and the practice (sunnah) of our Prophet Muhammad (SAW)" - Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi

Proper nourishment is essential for the balanced development of a child. But today the whole world is mostly concerned (if at all) about just one type of development - the physical development of a child. Even this is sometimes compromised by the economic interests of nations, multinational corporations and the media. For example it is so common these days to see horrible junk food advertisements targeted at children. Moreover when it comes to intellectual (mind) and spiritual (heart) development no one has a clue about them. Even the educational establishments which traditionally were focusing on intellectual and spiritual development of human beings have totally lost their way and are now only concerned about the physical development by helping people acquire skills, certificates and degrees so that they could earn a livelihood. So it is no wonder that despite the advancements in science and technology the well-being of the human is at its lowest with soaring suicide rates, dysfunctional families, mental health problems, greed and youth unrest.

If this is the state of the world then who is going to properly nourish the mind, body and spirit of the children? And more importantly how would that be done? Only if we find answers to these questions and apply them we can expect to raise righteous, balanced and bright children in the 21st century.

To explore these questions and more, register today for the groundbreaking seminar Raising A Muslim Child in The 21st Century - Preparing The Leaders of Tomorrow by Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi to be held this Saturday in Cambridge. Shaykh Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi takes a very unique multi-faceted approach to this subject. So register now without delay to secure your place and benefit from this invaluable seminar. How To Raise A MUSLIM CHILD in The 21st Century?

Raising righteous, bright and confident children is a concern and a challenge for every Muslim parent. The challenge is multiplied by the turbulent and toxic environment, such as has never been witnessed before, with the convergence of consumerism, promiscuity, education, technology and popular culture. Unfortunately this challenge is too overwhelming for many Muslim parents that they decide to "go with the flow" like everyone else. This is so because they don't realise that they have something with them that could not only help them withstand the greatest of challenges but also (more importantly) change the environment to one which is conducive to raising righteous, bright and confident children.

The previous brilliant seminar 21st Century Children - Raising Boys & Girls in The Modern World by Sue Palmer (Author of Toxic Childhood) highlighted the major issues that any parent should be concerned about in bringing up children in the modern world. The forthcoming seminar Raising A MUSLIM CHILD in The 21st Century - Preparing The Leaders of Tomorrow by Shaykh Dr Mohammed Akram Nadwi deals with more deeper issues and gives specific guidance for Muslims in a way that has never been done before in the English language. Undoubtedly this seminar is more important for the Muslims because it focuses on raising children who would not only withstand challenges but actually help eradicate those challenges (as the leaders of tomorrow) in a way that was exemplified and envisaged by our father Ibrahim (AS) thousands of years ago and showed by our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in even more detail as the seal of the prophets.

So if you are concerned about raising children in the modern world and particularly in the West then register today for this groundbreaking seminar to be held in less than one week's time to explore the basic yet profound teachings of all of the messengers and particularly of Ibrahim (AS) and Muhammad (PBUH) in how to raise righteous, bright and confident children in the 21st century.
